Well, many sects of Christianity (and to a far lesser extent some of Judaism) have, at various times and places been “evil” too: the Crusades, sexual abuse of kids by priests (not just Catholic), sexism/patriarchy, anti-Gay and trans-antagonist values, hate by Christians directed at Jews, Muslims, Wiccans and Pagans, etc., “justifying” slavery and racist laws against inter-racial marriage, trying to prevent abused women from leaving horrible marriages, encouraging the passage of laws against abortion even in the case of rape, incest, or danger to the health or life of the pregnant person, etc., etc., etc.

So no, Islam is not special in that department at all. The same can be said, by the way, for some Buddhists and some Hindus. There is no faith on earth that doesn't have its highly problematic sects.

If you want my advice, I would learn as much as I could about Islam, if I were you. That way it would become more familiar and less emotionally threatening. Also, you might find Sufism interesting as it is a generally more progressive sect of Islam.
